“Brave heart”movie report
Definition and significance of leadership is a chapter in the book В«The art and science of Leadership”Fifth edition by Afsaneh Nahavandi. Of the many topics in this chapter is effective leadership. The movie В«Brave heartВ» fits into this topic so perfectly. The movie В«Brave heart”is authored by a Scotsman, Gibson Mel and it talks about how the author who portrayed sir William Wallace fought to attain freedom for the people of Scotland during the oppressive rule of the English men. He opposed the Scottish king”Longshanks”and came to the forefront of the Scottish independence first war.
Looking at Wallace, everybody sees him as a leader. He leads his army through the battle when his wife Murron is killed by the magistrate. He guided his people who were the men from his village and the neighboring clan through the killing of the English lord and they burnt the garrison. By doing so, he guided and directed on a course thus describing him and fitting him in the definition of a leader. (Nahavandi A., 2008). His army and he succeeded in most of their battles against the English. He had a commanding authority and influence. His legend spread and many of the Scots volunteered to join him in the battle. He also gained the admiration of little Robert the Bruce whose father was chief contender for the crown of Scotland. The nobles of the Scottish allowed him to honor his captains due to his success in Stirling.
According to Nahavand the writer of the book В«The art and science of leadershipВ», leadership can be viewed as an important part in a group process and as an instrument used to achieve a goal. (Nahavandi A., 2008). In the movie, there was one definite goal which was to attain freedom which had been lacking for long in England under the leadership of King Edward”Longshanks”. His leadership was oppressive and due to this Wallace lost his brother and father. It was then so evident that the people required a leader who would lead them towards the achievement of the freedom they so much wanted. This is why after the wars and fights, and Wallace is caught and tortured for long, when the magistrate hears the yells of mercy from Londoners and offers Wallace a final chance, Wallace shouts”Freedom!”
For any definition of leadership, there must be three elements which are common. According to Nahavand there must be a group phenomenon, a goal directed, and hierarchy in the group. (Nahavandi A., 2008). In the movie, the group phenomenon is well illustrated where you see Wallace having a large number of people whom to them Wallace is their leader guiding them towards the achievement of freedom. There is hierarchy in the group as you find Wallace being their leader there are captains who follow his orders and this means that they are under him.
As a leader Wallace influences people in his clan and the neighbors and guides them through the establishment of their goal. He all the way directs the towards this goal achievement. He does this through his actions and the people are influences through his legend. He tries and finds where the existing leadership in the country is oppressive and plans to take vengeance. This made all the people in the country of Scotland to start fighting for liberation. By doing so he inspires the people to follow his articulated vision. (Nahavandi A., 2008).
In her book, Nahavandi describes an effective leader as one whose group performs well. This is brought about by the group satisfaction through their leader and the out come is as desired. In the movie, there was freedom at last as the desired result. Every one even the enemies were satisfied by the work and the courage that Wallace had and remain in his memory even after his death. Bruce asks his charges to fight with the same way they did with Wallace. When Hamish threw the sword belonging to Wallace, it landed on the ground and the army chanted Wallace, Wallace, Wallace! As the movie end, Mel Gibson’s voice intonates victory of the Scottish as their freedom battle was a success. (Gibson M., 1995).
In the book, leadership effectiveness is further defined as helping the people one leads to improve in their communication, collaboration and innovation. (Nahavandi A., 2008). When people realize that the deeds of Wallace could bring them freedom they collaborated by forming partnership with him and they together fought towards the achievement of their goal; freedom. They became Wallace captains and together they eliminated the evil of oppression through much pain and loss of lives. Even those who tried to betray him like his friend Bruce lived with a lot of guilt after attempts because they knew what Wallace was out to fight for. Instead they had to come together as one so as to beat their enemies. Isabelle who was the wife to Edward, Prince of Wales had to secretly help Wallace in his fight. This was after she had what he was doing and personally meeting with him. After learning that his father was treacherous, the young Bruce decides to disown him and follow Wallace. (Gibson M., 1995).
The movie also shows that a leader should lead and manage change for his people. (Nahavandi A, 1995). When Gibson realized that the English men were being oppressive to them, he led his people to fight for their freedom. Although not so many people were supportive of his fight for freedom, he was very determined to lead the willing ones till they witnessed a change in the oppressive nature of the English men.
